Material exploration
The main objective of this project was to choose a raw material and observe how they would react when working under various different techniques and I chose to use clay. A variety of experiments were conducted using a sponge soaked in the clay slip, which caught my eyes by chance.
By stitching a sponge, a mould was made, which was then carved. The soaked sponge was also baked and cut into thin slices allowing them to have an organic texture. These were tested in different experiments, including form, density, and transparency. Various shapes and sizes of bowls and cups were born through this process.
A sponge itself cannot endure the heat of a kiln, but a slip-soaked sponge will produce an identical, durable ceramic piece.
